The EFR represents French scientific research in Italy and the Central Mediterranean in the fields of history, archaeology and social sciences. The School organises programmes and research projects with partners (mainly French and Italian), but also from the Maghreb, countries bordering the Adriatic Sea (Albania, Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia) and the European Union.
These activities are supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in consultation with the Commission for Archaeological Research Abroad), by the National Research Agency (ANR: Agence nationale de la recherche), by European programmes and by the CNRS. They also benefit from partnerships with universities and international institutions.
The research is monitored by the Institut de France (Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres), by a board of directors and a scientific council, and evaluated by the High Council for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES).
