Presentation

This heritage science research project proposes to process and analyse the unpublished documentation produced during the most recent restoration of the Carracci Gallery at the Palazzo Farnese, from 2013 to 2015. The data contained therein will be examined for the first time, and supplemented by an in-depth study of the critical fortunes of the artwork. For the Baroque period, the Carracci Gallery plays a role comparable to that of the Sistine Chapel for the Renaissance, namely as a model to which all artists referred. Knowledge of the techniques used by the Carracci is therefore key to understanding the transformations that occurred during this commission and which determined much of the evolution of painting in Rome, and then throughout Europe, in the 17th century onwards. The project will allow optimal study of these transformations thanks to the involvement of the restoration stakeholders and associated research laboratories, and to the provision in database form of the results of their intervention. Doing this will require restorers, technical art historians, scientists, art historians, historians and architects to work synergistically.
