Awards at the École française de Rome

Each year, the École française de Rome offers monthly grants, to provide temporary accommodation for young researchers whose work requires a stay in Italy (article 25 of decree no. 2011-164 of February 10, 2011, amended). As specified in article 1 of the decree of September 19, 1974, "the work and research of the beneficiaries must correspond to the scientific mission assigned to the École française de Rome". In this context, the awards are intended to help doctoral students during the first years of their thesis work.

Selection criteria

Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:

• either be registered:
  • in a French university
  • in a co-supervision with a French university
  • in a French higher education and research establishment (École normale supérieure, École nationale des Chartes, École Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Institute of Political Studies, etc.)
• or come from a country where the École works:
  • countries of the Maghreb
  • countries of Southeastern Europe close to the Adriatic Sea.

Candidates must be enrolled as a doctoral student and have already clearly defined their thesis subject with the help of their supervisor.

Nationals of Maghreb and South-Eastern European countries close to the Adriatic Sea can benefit from awards after the doctorate (senior scholarships).

The requested length of stay (1 or 2 months) must be consistent with the work programme. The location should depend on the work programme; travel within Italy is permitted if justified; travel expenses are not reimbursed.

It should be noted that the Vatican Apostolic Archives are closed each year from July 15 to September 15.

The selection committee includes the director of the École and the three directors of studies.
