Inaugural conference of the international doctoral workshop "What Place for Minorities"
The early modern period witnessed a variety of experiments to define institutional arrangements within which ideas of difference could be managed. These included what Schilling and others have termed "confessionalization", which is to say the physical separation of groups into sovereign spaces; but they also included ideas deriving from the so-called "Pact of Umar", the arrangement purportedly defined in the 7th century at the time of the Rightly Guided Caliphs of Islam. This talk will explore some of the ways in which such experiments emerged, and circulated as "modular forms", in a situation where empires both collided and competed.
Sanjay Subrahmanyam is a distinguished Professor of History at University of California, Los Angeles (Irving and Jean Stone Chair in Social Sciences), and professor at the Collège de France (Early Modern Global History Chair). He teaches medieval and early modern South Asian and Indian Ocean history; the history of European expansion, the comparative history of early modern empires; and world history.
