From May 24 to July 24, the École française de Rome displays in its gallery, at piazza Navona 62, the photography exhibition Islam in Enderta. Two Years of Archaeological Survey and Excavations in Eastern Tigray, Ethiopia.

This exhibition presents the work of the European Research Council (ERC) project HornEast in northern Ethiopia. During four campaigns carried out between 2018 and 2019 before being interrupted by the war, a French-Ethiopian team of archaeologists and historians, helped by local communities, explored the remains of the medieval Islamic past in a region regarded as the cradle of Ethiopian Christianity.

Photographs, videos and thematic panels evoke the discoveries of Muslim funerary sites and their Arabic epitaphs carved in stone, the new data brought by epigraphy and archaeology on the medieval Muslim communities and their funerary practices, and the excavation of a tell occupied for nearly two millennia.

The exhibition opens  will be open from Wednesday 24 May 2023, 2 p.m., on the occasion of the international conference Ethiopians abroad in the Middle Ages and and as part of the projet ERC COG HornEast* (Horn & Crescent. Connections, Mobility and Exchange between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East in the Middle Ages).

Curator: Simon Dorso (ERC HornEast).

Photographers : Deresse Ayenachew, Nicolas Baker, Amélie Chekroun, Simon Dorso, Julien Loiseau, Camille Vanhove.
