The consequences of World War One on Christian Churches in Europe

Between 12 and 14 November 2018 KADOC-KU Leuven, the Academia Belgica, the Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rom, the École française de Rome, the Österreichisches Historisches Institut in Rom, and the Pontifical Committee on the Historical Sciences organize an international workshop in Rome focusing on the 'Effects of World War I on the Christian Churches in Europe, 1918-1925’. Senior and junior academics and researches will present new and innovative research concerning different aspects of the main theme: churches confronted with fading and new nation states and post-war opportunities and challenges; supranational relationships, ecumenism and mission movements; humanitarism and Christian charity; religious personnel and communities facing the post-war world; Rome and local Catholic communities.
A special evening session at the Belgian Embassy to the Holy See is scheduled on Monday evening 12 November and will include a lecture by prof. Jan De Volder on his new book ‘Cardinal Mercier in the First World War. Belgium, Germany and the Catholic Church’ and a lecture by father Bernard Ardura o. praem, president of the Pontifical Committee on the Historical Sciences.

Du 12 au 14 novembre 2018 KADOC-KU Leuven, l’Academia Belgica, le Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rom, l’École française de Rome, le Österreichisches Historisches Institut in Rom, et le Comité Pontifical des Sciences Historiques organisent un workshop international à Rome sur « Les effets de la Première Guerre Mondiale sur les Eglises en Europe, 1918-1925 ». Des experts et des chercheurs prometteurs présenteront leurs résultats des recherches nouvelles et innovatrices concernant différents aspects de ce sujet central: les Eglises, confrontées à des états moribonds ou nouveaux et à des nations différentes et faisant face aux opportunités et défis d’après-guerre; les relations supranationales; l’œcuménisme et les mouvements missionnaires; l’humanitarisme et la charité chrétienne; le personnel et les communautés religieuses et le monde d’après-guerre; les relations entre Rome et les communautés catholiques locales.
Une session nocturne est programmée à l’Ambassade Belge près le Saint-Siège lundi 12 novembre, avec une présentation du prof. Jan De Volder sur sa nouvelle publication Cardinal Mercier in the First World War. Belgium, Germany and the Catholic Church et une conférence du père Bernard Ardura o. praem, président du Comité Pontifical des Sciences Historiques.

Dei ricercatori promettenti e degli esperti rinomati presenteranno i loro nuovi ed innovativi risultati di ricerca su vari aspetti del tema centrale: le chiese in rapporto con gli stati moribondi e le nuove nazioni ; le chiese e le sfide e le opportunità del dopoguerra ; le relazioni sovranazionali ; l’ecumenismo e i movimenti missionari; l’umanitarismo e la carità cristiana ; il personale e le comunità religiose e il mondo postbellico ; le relazioni tra Roma e le comunità cattoliche locali.
Una sessione notturna si svolgerà lunedì sera, il 12 novembre, all’Ambasciata Belga presso la Santa Sede che sarà dedicata ad una presentazione del Prof. Jan De Volder sulla sua nuova pubblicazione ‘Cardinal Mercier in the First World War. Belgium, Germany and the Catholic Church’ e ad una conferenza di Padre Bernard Ardura o. praem, presidente del Pontificio Comitato di Scienze Storiche.
